How many words per page?

How many words does a typed page contain? This seemingly simple question may pose a real challenge for students. In fact, it is the reason why nowadays most assignments mention the word count students are expected to submit rather than the required number of pages. However, even if your professor is slightly old fashioned about formulating assignment instructions there is nothing to worry about.

It is easy to come about the number of words per a standard page when bearing in mind a few points about formatting a standard academic paper:

  • One-inch margins are normally applied on each side of the page.
  • As a rule, either Times New Roman or Arial fonts are used.
  • The font size is 12.

The points outlined above apply to the vast majority of student papers including term papers and research projects. However, there is one element of formatting that affects the word count per page significantly: the spacing. Thus, most of the papers are written with double spacing between lines to improve readability. There are instances, however, when you are expected to apply single spacing.

There are also assignments for which non-standard page layouts are used. For example, you may be requested to create a brochure or a poster for some of your projects. The good news is, however, that educators are well aware of the irregular nature of such tasks. Therefore, they are unlikely to make you face additional difficulty by not specifying the expected word count.

At the same time, being able to convert word count into approximate number of pages is useful when you receive assigned word count to follow so that you are able to plan in advance how many pages to write and how many time to spend on researching the topic of your assignment.

Bearing in mind the formatting conventions of academic papers presented above, it has been observed that one double-spaced page usually contains around 250 words. Consequently, one page of single-spaced text comprises around 500 words.

The numbers presented above are approximate since the amount of words on each page is influenced by the formatting choices such as the size of paragraphs and inclusion of lists and tables in the text. At the same time, the estimated word count of a page can be used to answer the following frequently asked questions with considerable reliability.
